How much mulch do you need...how to figure it out...

Typically, you will need 3-4 inches of mulch to cover your space. The reason for this is because the first rain will wash some of the mulch away.

Although we do have a mulch calculator to the right of this blog, I will give you the formula to figure it out.

Measure your space in feet.
Take the total and divide it by 3. (This gives you the square yard total)

Take 3 or 4 inches of mulch and divide it by 36.
Take the total and multiply it by the square yardage total.

This will give you the total cubic yards.
We sell our mulch by the cubic yard and sell in half yard increments.

Here is an example using 183 feet of coverage:
  • 183 divided by 3 = 61
  • 3 divided by 36 =.08333
  • .08333 x 61 = 5.083
5 cubic yards of mulch

Why should I lay mulch?

It is springtime and time for mulch! Ever wonder why you should lay mulch? Let me explain...

By laying mulch, you allow the soil to stay moist. It also improves the overall health / fertility of the soil. Mulch decreases the growth of weeds and makes the landscape look more appealing.

Mulch will also improve the temperature of the soil. It keeps the soil cool in summer and warm in the winter.

When is the best time to lay mulch for the summer?

To prepare your yard for summer, it is best to lay your mulch mid to late spring. One reason for this timing is to get your mulch down before plants and grass start to grow. Mulching too early will prevent the ground from warming properly.

TIP: If the soil is dry prior to mulching, water it and pulling weeds will become an easier task.

Bottom line is, spring is coming and we at Deadwood Reclaimed Materials are here to provide mulch for your landscaping needs.
