How much mulch do you need...how to figure it out...

Typically, you will need 3-4 inches of mulch to cover your space. The reason for this is because the first rain will wash some of the mulch away.

Although we do have a mulch calculator to the right of this blog, I will give you the formula to figure it out.

Measure your space in feet.
Take the total and divide it by 3. (This gives you the square yard total)

Take 3 or 4 inches of mulch and divide it by 36.
Take the total and multiply it by the square yardage total.

This will give you the total cubic yards.
We sell our mulch by the cubic yard and sell in half yard increments.

Here is an example using 183 feet of coverage:
  • 183 divided by 3 = 61
  • 3 divided by 36 =.08333
  • .08333 x 61 = 5.083
5 cubic yards of mulch

Why cedar mulch?

www.4seasonsphotographyonline.com

Cedar mulch is organic, long lasting and does not have to be replaced as often as other mulch options. It also repels insects, pests, fungus and bacteria.

Cedar mulch conserves soil moisture which makes it perfect for perennial beds.

One last reason to choose cedar mulch... It makes the yard or garden look neat and pretty!

Can mulch prevent weeds?

In order for mulch to act as a barrier for weeds, you have to lay down a minimum 3 inch layer of mulch.

In order to survive, weeds need light and warm soil. So, by adding extra mulch over the top of weeds, it blocks the sunlight and prohibits growth.

You can also use what is called a double mulching technique to keep weeds at bay. Lay down newspaper, then add mulch on top.

Of course, no technique is guaranteed to keep weeds away, but these two techniques will definitely help!
